Ekweremadu Tasks Presidency To Up Palliatives On COVID-19
Former Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu has called on the presidency to consider increasing the number of beneficiaries and amount given to each of them in the Conditional Cash Transfer programme, to alleviate suffering of more indigent Nigerians, as part of the fight against coronavirus pandemic in the country.
Represented by one of his aides and secretary of Peoples Democratic party in Enugu state, Cletus Akalusi, Ekweremadu who is also the Senator representing Enugu West, made the call while distributing food stuffs
to the five local government areas of the zone for indigent households as palliatives to cushion the effect of the pandemic.
While acknowledging the proactive measures taken by South East governors Senator Ike Ekweremadu who is also a member of the International Parliamentary Taskforce on COVID-19, commended the government of Enugu state for the successful management and discharge of the two COVID-19 index cases in the state.
Senator Ekweremadu promised to ensure that every state in the South East geopolitical zone would get its due share of all interventions by the federal government, urging wealthy people from the area to make individual contributions towards mitigating the hardship on the poor masses.
President of Ohaneze Ndigbo in Enugu state, Chief Alex Ogbonna while charging the various local government areas to distribute the items without discrimination, called on other leaders to emulate the kind gesture.
Also in separate remarks, chairman of Ezeagu local government area, Chukwudi Ani, his Aninri counterpart, Ezekiel Chukwu, as well as PDP chairman, Awgu local government area, Okey Ude, gave assurance that the food items would be shared properly, and appreciated the senator’s selfless services.
The COVID-19 palliatives including 1,500 ten-kilogram bags of rice and 1,000 cartons of noodles, were received by each chairman of the five LGAs in the zone, Aninri, Awgu, Ezeagu, Oji-River and Udi, as shared accordingly for onward distributions to the target beneficiaries in their respective council areas.
The 162 traditional rulers in the senatorial districts also got their own shares of the COVID-19 palliatives.
