*COVID-19: Don’t Lower Your Guard on Borders, Enugu Council Chairman Charges Security Agencies*
Chairman, Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu state, Hon. Uchenna Nwobodo, has commended the enforcement of the border shutdown and ban on interstate movement on the Local Government’s borders with Ebonyi State.
Nwobodo spoke during an inspection tour of security posts manned by the combined team of the Nigeria Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, personnel of the Enugu Forest Guards and the Neighbourhood Watch at the Council’s borders with Ebonyi State at the weekend.
The Council boss however, called on the law enforcement agencies not to relent in their efforts to ensure full compliance with the shutdown of the State’s borders as directed by Governor of the State, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, some weeks ago to prevent COVID-19 spread in Enugu State.
He said: “We embarked on this enforcement monitoring and drive because Nkanu East is a border local government. I am happy that we have covered the security and enforcement posts at Eke-Agu Owo and Amechi Idodo boundaries with Nkalagu, Ebonyi State, Okeani Amagunze boundary with Ikomolu, Ebonyi State as well as Isiogbo Nara boundary with Isu, Ebonyi State, Ndiagu Umuiba Nara boundary with Ezza Igbaji, Ebonyi State and Imeoha Nkerefi boundary with Uburu, Ebonyi State.
“I commend the capacity, professionalism, and synergy exhibited by security personnel driving the border shutdown along our boundaries with Ebonyi State. But I have to also charge them not to lower their guard as the enforcement is critical to the State Government’s strategy in the containment of the pandemic.
“And on behalf of the good people of the Council, I must commend the governor’s leadership at a time like this as we have no established case of COVID-19 in the State since the two index cases have been treated and discharged over a week ago.
“But going forward, our ability to implement the governor’s directive on border shutdown and observe other precautionary measures and guidelines by the government and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control will go a long way in keeping the state safe”.
Hon. Nwobodo, who was accompanied by the Members of the Nkanu East Security Council, and the Deputy Council Chairman, Hon. Martin Agbo, also enjoined the security agencies to continue on the path of civility in enforcing the border shutdown, stressing the Council’s commitment to sustained enlightenment campaigns on COVID-19 prevention and cushioning of the effects of restrictions through palliatives.
