Enugu  state command of the Nigeria Police is to set up a special team to monitor activities of men of the force alleged to be involved in extortion of the general public, especially motorists across the state.

The state Commissioner of Police, Abubakar Lawal, disclosed this at a press briefing in Enugu, describing the alleged act as unwholesome and a tarnish on the image of the noble security force.

CP Lawal promised that anyone found culpable of the allegation would be dealt with accordingly, noting ” no officer can direct his men to go and extort the public, because they are expected to protect the people, not extort them”.

He further expressed readiness of the Command to review its checkpoints across the state, insisting that every checkpoint must be located according to necessity.

The state Police boss however, presented facts of security achievements of the Command, showing a total of 120 arrests made within the past two weeks, in connection with offences including, armed robbery, kidnap, arson, vandalism, child trafficking, murder, unlawful possession of firearms/ammunition and stealing, with some of the stolen items and exhibits recovered.

The CP used the medium to advise the people of Enugu state to desist from the use of fireworks, warning that”the law banning it in the state is still in force” as defaulters would be made to face its full weight.

He insisted that the Command would also go after dealers in the explosives and asked parents and guardians to guard their children accordingly, to ensure a peaceful Yuletide.

CP Lawal commended the state governor, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for providing enabling environment for their smooth operations. 

 “The Executive Governor, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, has truly shown that he is a worthy Chief Security Officer of the State, as his financial, material and moral supports, have immensely contributed to these breakthroughs”, CP Daura acknowledged.  

It was the maiden press briefing of the latest and  25th Commissioner of Police in Enugu state, CP Abubakar Daura, who assumed office in August, 2021.
