Constituency Project:Enugu Lawmaker Installs 150 Solar Power Street Lights In Rural Areas
Member representing Igbo-Eze North II constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, Mr Innocent Ugwu, has inaugurated 150 solar-powered street lights he installed in his constituency.
Speaking on Sunday during the installation of the street lights in Aji, Enugu-Ezike, Ugwu said the gesture was geared towards bringing dividends of democracy to his constituents.
According to him, the street lights would go a long way in restoring night life, which he regretted was dying off, as well as improving security in the area.
He added that the gesture was to support the rural development agenda of the state government, championed by Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, which he believed would curtail the increasing rural-urban migration in the state.
“In line with his (Gov. Ugwuanyi’s) work in the state, I want to use this opportunity to support what His Excellency is doing to make sure that democracy reach the grassroots.
“I cannot fold my hands and watch the governor embark on rural development without making effort to contribute my own quota as a lawmaker,” Ugwu said.
He disclosed that each of the 10 political wards that made up the Igbo-Eze North II constituency got 15 street lights.
The lawmaker promised that he would continue to better the lives of his constituents through quality representation.
Also, the member representing Igbo-Eze North/ Udenu Federal Constituency, Dr Simon Atigwe, who was present at the event, commended the lawmaker for the donation of the street lights, which he said would add value to the security of the benefitting communities.
The federal lawmaker stressed that Ugwu was touching the lives of rural dwellers by lighting up the area, hinting that Igbo-Eze North is one of the rural Local Government Areas in Nigeria.
He added that the state government needed to do a lot towards the development of the Local Government Area by embarking on construction of rural roads, sinking of boreholes and renovation of health centres in the area.
The chairman, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Enugu North senatorial zone, Chief Michael Onyeze, while applauding the lawmaker for his gesture, however charged youths interested in politics to first find their careers.
Onyeze said that many youths had jettisoned their education and careers to play politics, thereby neglecting to find something to sustain themselves, and warned them against seeing politics as a career.
The Zonal PDP chairman reminded the youths that nobody would take them serious, if they did not have anything to contribute for the betterment of humanity.
News Agency of Nigeria reports that the lawmaker had earlier celebrated Christmas in his constituency, where he donated wrappers and food items worth over N4 million to his constituents.
