Enugu Good Governance: N400m Mega Secretariat Building Emerges In Isi-Uzo This Next Month
An edifice of the new Secretariat for Isi-Uzo local government area, Enugu state, embarked upon by the present administration of the Council is nearing completion.
The project which is a completeness of all the needed facilities for smooth running of the council, is an obvious shift from the old divisional headquarters building of Isi- Uzo which has called for total facility upgrade.
This was part of the observation by the Enugu State Good Governance Team, consisting of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Nigeria Union of Journalists and Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in the state, during a project inspection visit to the council area on Wednesday.
In addition to the executive offices, the edifice also embodies two event halls each of 500-seater capacity.
While conducting the team round some of the projects undertaken by the local government, the council chairman, Hon. Obiora Obeagu explained “we came on board and discovered the lack of accommodation to host events which left us with only the option of hiring accommodation to hold events.
“With this it is going to save us the cost of paying for such space to hold our events and also add to the esthetics of the environment.
“We shall also open it to rent by groups and individuals who are holding events, to help us sustain its maintenance”, he further explained.
Hon. Obeagu noted that the building was designed to suit the current office demands in terms of facilities and “this project will be completed and commissioned by this December “, Ibeagu added.
The team was also taken to project sites of the council health centre and a building for the Expanded Programme on Immunisation, EPI, completed by the council.
The council boss further narrated some challenges faceing the local government, especially, in the area of security in which the council had invested so much to secure lives and property of the people.
“We have been holding meetings to seek solutions to security problems.
“As we are speaking herders have taken over farm settlements in four communities in the area and we are into negotiations to resolve the matter”, the council boss narrated.
The chairman said that the council was also building 147 lockup shops at Ikem and Eha-Amufu, to boost commercial activities in the area.
Other projects undertaken by the council include, 3.5km road asphalting at Eha-Amufu, grading of roads with drainage system at Umuaram Ikem and Agamede Eha-Amufu and renovation of legislative building at the council headquarters, Ikem.
In separate remarks, leaders of the inspection team, the state chairman of NUJ, Comrade Sam Udekwe, state Coordinator of the coalition of CSOs, Onyebuchi Igboke and Vice-chairman of NLC, Comrade Ikechukwu Ekere, commended the chairman for embarking on projects with direct impact on the people and encouraged him to continue in that direction.
The good governance triparte initiative which is on its third edition, is a biennial exercise designed to promote accountability approach to governance, and encourage grassroots development.
