Police Establish CRU Regional Office In Enugu
South East regional office of the Complaint Response Unit(CRU) has been created by the Nigeria Police Force.
Head of CRU Force Headquarters, Chief Superintendent El- Mustapha Sani, disclosed this during a meeting of stakeholders of CRU with the authorities in Enugu on Thursday.
CSP Sani explained that the unit was created in response to the harrowing damage on the corporate image of the Force arising from the incessant allegations and reports of misconduct by the police officials at various levels.
He said the unit is charged with receiving complaints on such damaging acts and taking actions to redress same.
“Members of the public have the right to take note of their encounters with the officers and report appropriately where injured or abused”, he added.
Declaring the meeting open, the state Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu while acknowledging that the command had provided adequate office accommodation for the operations of the unit at the state police headquarters, encouraged the public not to shy away from exercising their rights by exposing the ills meted out to them by officers and men of the Force.
CP Uzuegbu noted that effective policing cannot be achieved without collaborative effort of the people.
“It is you who wear the shoe know where it pinches you. You know where and how you have been hurt and you let the authorities know about it”, CP Uzuegbu said.
He further recalled that a lot of their officers had been penalised, including outright sack, due to such nefarious acts like brutality, extortion and illegal operations.
Also in a presentation, a retired police officer and former Commissioner of Police, Enuge State Command, CP Emmanuel Ojukwu, attributed the persistent rot in the Nigerian policing system to the anomalies in the working conditions undergone by the men and officers of the Force.
CP Ojukwu explained that the officials were usually exposed to the temptation of all sorts of corruption as options, to meet up with the demands of their duties.
He opined that the corrective measures must start from the central administrative system and overall leadership principles in the country, which is not limited to the Police.
Traditional rulers, civil society managers, the media, the clergy, security experts,among other stakeholder groups, were part of the meeting.
