Political Gridlock:Police Take Over PDP Headquarters In Abuja To Prevent NEC Meeting From Holding
Armed police officers on Monday morning took control of the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wadata Plaza, in Abuja, effectively preventing a scheduled National Executive Committee (NEC) Expanded Caucus Meeting from holding. Tension flared at the party secretariat as officers blocked entry to the premises, citing undisclosed security directives. According to a senior PDP official who spoke to newsmen on condition of anonymity, the security operatives were deployed specifically to halt the NEC meeting. “At first, some staff members were allowed into the building,” the source explained, “but shortly after, they were ordered out. Journalists were also forced to leave the premises.” Dalaba Street, the main road leading to the PDP secretariat, was barricaded, cutting off access to the building. Several police vehicles and officers were stationed strategically around the area, with no official statement yet from the Nigeria Police Force as to the reason for the action. The development comes amid internal disputes and political wrangling within the opposition party, as factions jostle for control ahead of the 2027 general elections. The now-disrupted NEC meeting was expected to address some of the critical leadership and strategic issues facing the party.
Party members and stakeholders are reportedly gathering at alternative locations to decide on the next line of action, while others await a possible intervention from party elders or national authorities.
As of press time, the atmosphere around Wadata Plaza remained tense, with party loyalists expressing concern over what they described as an “unprecedented crackdown on democratic engagement.”
