Igga Royal Father Declares Ban on Commercial Tree Felling, Orders Land Recovery
…Launches Major Community Reforms

In a momentous gathering that echoed the voices of generations past, the Igga General Assembly in Uzo-Uwani local government area, Enugu state convened on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at Olopu-Oja, the historic village square of Igga community. The assembly, the only one of such in over a decade, underscored the community’s commitment to unity, progress, and cultural heritage, bringing to an end, all pending conflicts and domestic disagreements over various issues. The meeting, attended by distinguished elders, women, elites and youths of Igga, marked a significant step towards modern governance rooted in tradition.
In his address at the event, recognising the need for a contemporary framework that reflects both modern realities and traditional values, the traditional ruler of Igga community, HRH Igwe(Dr) Herbert Ukuta noted that the formation of the Constitution Review Committee inaugurated during the general assembly was predicated on the need for assessing and updating Igga’s community constitution to promote fairness, accountability, and inclusive governance.
Addressing growing concerns over illegal land sales, the Igwe affirmed that no communal land can be sold without the consent of the Igwe-in-Council and the General Assembly, noting that “a dedicated Land Recovery and Verification Committee will be established to investigate and reclaim our ancestral lands”.
In light of environmental degradation, he said “effective immediately, all commercial tree felling in Igga territory is suspended.
“The palace will conduct an Environmental Audit to assess damage and implement a restoration plan, ensuring future generations inherit a healthy environment”.
Igwe Ukuta emphasised the need for responsible development of Igga’s abundant natural resources, including solid minerals and fossil fuels.
“Any mining or resource exploitation will require consultation with relevant stakeholders, including the Enugu State Government and an Economic Committee to be formed for this purpose.
While unveiling plans for the modern development of Ogogba, a wide expanse of agro-resourceful area with the intent to create a vibrant commercial and agricultural zone in Igga community, the traditional ruler explained that an Economic Committee to be set up, would seek partnerships to draw investments while preserving Igga’s cultural and environmental integrity.
Igwe Ukuta who is also the Chairman, Enugu North zonal traditional rulers council, highlighted the need for economic empowerment through the establishment of transparent internal revenue systems emphsising that local levies, resource royalties, and cooperative enterprises would play a key role in fostering independent community revenue. He further promised that young people would benefit from various training programmes aimed at skill development and entrepreneurship.
In a rallying call to civic duty, Igwe Ukuta urged all eligible citizens of Igga, both at home and abroad, to participate actively in the democratic process by registering to vote. He underscored the importance of a united voice in local and state governance matters.
The traditional ruler warned against any actions disrespecting the palace and its authority, emphasising that such acts could lead to serious traditional and legal implications. He asserted his commitment to protecting the dignity of the Igga community, noting “respect for the throne is not about one man — it is about the dignity of our entire people. I will not allow the sacred institution of Igga to be disrespected under my watch”.
Igwe Ukuta called upon every son and daughter of Igga to unite for truth, justice, and development, stressing that the key to advancing the community lies in discipline, respect for tradition, and collective efforts.
“Let peace return to every heart and home in Igga. Let no man sow division or hatred among us. Our progress lies in unity, discipline, and respect for tradition.
“Today, I call upon every Igga son and daughter — at home and abroad — to rise in defense of truth, justice, and development. Together, we shall rebuild our Kingdom to greater glory”, he said.
The assembly saw the inauguration of two critical committees: the Constitution Review Committee and the Town Union Electoral Committee, both aimed at improving governance and representation within the community.
As the sun set over Olopu-Oja, it illuminated the faces of attendees who left with a renewed sense of purpose, ready to embrace the challenges that lay ahead for the betterment of the Igga community.
