Disability Group Seeks Inclusive Measures as Enugu Begins BRT Restrictions
The Enugu State chapter of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) has raised concerns over the potential impact of the state government’s ongoing transportation reforms on persons with disabilities, even as it expressed confidence in the government’s commitment to inclusive governance.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its chairman, Comrade Onyebuchi Mba, the association reacted to the recent announcement on government’s readiness to restrict tricycles, yellow buses, and minibuses from major highways as part of the state’s rollout of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
JONAPWD acknowledged the “innovation and vision” behind the reform but noted that the restriction could affect many persons with disabilities who depend on these modes of transportation for their daily mobility. The group stressed that accessible transportation remains a fundamental requirement for the full participation of persons with disabilities in society.
Comrade Mba assured members of the disability community that the association had already initiated engagements with key government bodies, including the Enugu State Disability Commission, to address the concerns and explore possible exemptions or alternative solutions that would cushion the impact on vulnerable groups.
He expressed confidence that Governor Peter Mbah’s administration described as empathetic and responsive, would consider the matter with the seriousness it deserves once brought to his attention.
“Transportation should be accessible and inclusive for all”.
“We will continue to work with the government and other stakeholders to ensure that our voices are heard and our needs are met”, the statement read.
The association urged its members to remain calm, patient, and vigilant as discussions continue, assuring them of timely updates and guidance on adapting to the evolving transport system.
JONAPWD reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of persons with disabilities in Enugu State and called for collective efforts toward building a fully inclusive and accessible society.
The statement further assured members that the association would remain steadfast in safeguarding their rights and interests as the state moves forward with its transportation overhaul.
