Senate Screens Ugwuanyi, Yakubu, Other Envoys-Designate, Grants Swift Clearance
The Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, on Thursday, screened several non-career ambassadorial nominees forwarded by President Bola Tinubu for confirmation.
Among those examined were former Enugu State governor, Rt Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu; and former presidential aide, Senator Ita Enang.
Ugwuanyi, who earlier served in the 5th, 6th and 7th National Assembly before completing two terms as governor, drew commendation from the committee. After assessing his credentials, the committee chairman, Senator Abubakar Bello (APC, Niger North), asked him to “take a bow and leave,” noting that his record of public service made further interrogation unnecessary.
In keeping with long-standing parliamentary tradition, several former ministers, ex-ambassadors and past lawmakers received similar treatment. The panel cited their previous clearance by the Senate and their extensive national service as grounds for the courtesy.
During the session, the nominees fielded questions on Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities, bilateral relations, and strategies for strengthening the nation’s diplomatic footprint and economic engagements abroad.
