Nigeria Confirms US Behind Airstrikes in Northwest

The Federal Government has confirmed ongoing structured security and intelligence cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, a partnership it says has contributed to recent precision airstrikes against terrorist enclaves in the North West.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria disclosed that the collaboration forms part of broader efforts to confront the persistent threat of terrorism and violent extremism across the country.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria confirms that Nigerian authorities remain engaged in structured security cooperation with international partners, including the United States of America, in addressing the persistent threat of terrorism and violent extremism,” the statement said.

According to the ministry, the partnership has resulted in “precision hits on terrorist targets in Nigeria by airstrikes in the North West.”

It explained that, in line with established international practice and existing bilateral understandings, the cooperation involves intelligence sharing, strategic coordination and other forms of support conducted within the framework of international law, mutual respect for sovereignty and shared commitments to regional and global security.

The Federal Government stressed that all counter-terrorism operations are guided by the overriding need to protect civilian lives, preserve national unity and uphold the rights and dignity of all Nigerians, regardless of faith or ethnicity.

“Terrorist violence in any form—whether directed at Christians, Muslims or other communities—remains an affront to Nigeria’s values and to international peace and security,” the ministry stated.

The government further noted that it continues to work closely with international partners through established diplomatic and security channels to dismantle terrorist networks, disrupt their financing and logistics, and prevent cross-border threats, while simultaneously strengthening Nigeria’s domestic security institutions and intelligence capabilities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured that it would sustain engagement with relevant partners and keep the public informed through appropriate official channels.
