Enugu Govt Bans Burning of Tyres on Roads During Yuletide
The Enugu State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure has issued a stern warning to residents against the burning of tyres and other combustible materials on public roads, streets and highways during the yuletide season, describing the practice as dangerous, unlawful and detrimental to public safety.
In a public notice signed by the Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Ngene, the ministry stated that the act poses serious risks to lives, causes damage to public infrastructure and obstructs the free flow of traffic across the state, especially during the festive period when road usage is at its peak.
The ministry stressed that the tradition of burning tyres, often associated with festive celebrations in some communities, will no longer be tolerated under any guise, as it undermines government efforts to ensure safety, orderliness and the protection of public assets.
According to the statement, the Nigerian Police Force and other relevant security agencies have been duly directed to arrest and prosecute any individual or group found engaging in the prohibited act, in line with existing laws.
The government, therefore, urged residents to embrace peaceful and responsible ways of celebrating the yuletide, emphasizing that public safety must not be compromised in the name of festivities.
“The burning of tyres on roads endangers lives, damages public infrastructure and disrupts traffic flow. Residents are advised to celebrate responsibly and avoid actions that could threaten the safety and well-being of others,” the statement read.
The ministry reaffirmed the commitment of the Enugu State Government to maintaining a safe, clean and peaceful environment during the festive season and beyond, calling on citizens to support these efforts by complying with the directive.
The notice further appealed to the public to work collectively with government and security agencies to ensure a hitch-free yuletide celebration in the state.
“Let us all work together to keep Enugu State safe, clean and peaceful during the festive period,” the statement concluded.
