NUJ Mourns as Seven Gombe Journalists Die in Fatal Road Crash

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the death of seven journalists from Gombe State who lost their lives in a tragic road traffic accident.

In a press release signed by its President, Alhassan Yahya, the union described the incident as a devastating blow to the journalism profession in Gombe State and across the country, noting that the deceased were dedicated media practitioners who served the public with courage, integrity and professionalism.

According to the NUJ, the untimely death of the journalists has created an irreplaceable void within the media community, stressing that their commitment to duty and service to society would be sorely missed.

“On behalf of the National Executive Council, the entire NUJ family nationwide and the Nigerian media community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Gombe State Council of the NUJ, as well as the families, friends and colleagues of our departed members”, the statement read.

The union said it stands in full solidarity with the bereaved families and the Gombe State media family at this difficult moment of grief, praying for strength and comfort for those left behind.

The NUJ further called on relevant authorities to urgently address the recurring issue of road accidents in the country, stressing the need for improved road safety measures and responsible driving to prevent avoidable loss of lives, particularly among professionals who travel frequently in the course of their duties.

“The tragic incident once again underscores the urgent need for improved road safety measures to curb the alarming rate of accidents on our highways”, the union noted.

The NUJ prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased journalists and asked God to grant their families and colleagues the fortitude to bear the painful loss.

“May the souls of our departed colleagues rest in perfect peace”, the statement added.
