Morocco Edge Nigeria on Penalties to Reach AFCON Final
Hosts Morocco booked a place in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday after edging Nigeria 4–2 in a tense penalty shootout, following a goalless draw after regulation and extra times.
In a fiercely contested semi-final played under intense atmosphere, both sides failed to break the deadlock after 90 minutes and an additional 30 minutes of extra time, forcing the encounter to be decided from the spot. Morocco held their nerve in the shootout, converting four of their penalties, while Nigeria faltered.
Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno both failed to score for the Super Eagles, handing the advantage to the North Africans, who missed only one kick in the sequence to seal victory and ignite celebrations among the home supporters.
The match, however, was not without controversy, as Nigeria were left aggrieved by what they perceived as imbalanced officiating that appeared to favour the host nation at crucial moments of the encounter. Several decisions during the game drew protests from the Nigerian bench and players, adding to the tension that characterised the semi-final.
Despite their elimination, Nigeria matched the hosts for long periods, creating chances and defending resolutely against sustained Moroccan pressure. The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to the third-place playoff against Egypt, scheduled for Saturday.
Morocco, buoyed by home support and their hard-fought victory, will face reigning champions Senegal in Sunday’s final, in what promises to be a compelling clash between North and West African football powerhouses.
The final is expected to draw massive continental attention as Morocco seek to crown their AFCON campaign on home soil, while Senegal aim to reaffirm their dominance in African football.
