Nigeria’s National Grid Suffers First Collapse of 2026, Triggers Nationwide Blackout
Nigeria was plunged into darkness on Friday following the collapse of the national electricity grid, marking the first system failure recorded in 2026.
Data obtained from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) revealed that power generation dropped to zero megawatts (MW) at the peak of the incident, resulting in a total shutdown of electricity supply across the country.
NISO further confirmed that load allocation to all 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) was reduced to zero megawatts as of 1:00 p.m. on Friday.
The affected DisCos include Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja and Yola, leaving customers within their coverage areas without power supply.
The cause of the grid collapse and efforts to restore supply had not been officially disclosed as of press time.
