United State Shuts Embassy In Nigeria
The United States Embassy in Abuja has announced it will close temporarily for routine services due to fears of protests in the city.
The embassy said it will remain closed until Monday, March 9, 2026, affecting visa and American Citizen Services (ACS) appointments. Appointments that were scheduled for March 4 and 5 have been rescheduled.
Visa applicants have been asked to check their email or AVITs account for new dates, while ACS applicants are to confirm their rescheduled slots through email. Those who do not receive a new date have been directed to seek help via the Visa Navigator platform.
This closure comes after a report of planned demonstrations in Abuja linked to the conflict with Iran. Security agencies increased their presence across the city following protests by the Islamic Movement in Nigeria in other states, including Niger, Sokoto, Kaduna, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, and Lagos.
The IMN reportedly said the protests are a peaceful show of support for Iran following the reported death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in airstrikes alleged to have been carried out by the U.S. and Israel. The embassy advised the public to follow its official
