On the very bright Thursday August 21, 2025, the air buzzed with anticipation as dignitaries, locals, and media gathered at the elegantly refurbished Hotel Presidential, once a fading gem in Enugu State’s hospitality landscape. The state governor, Dr Peter Mbah stood at the forefront of this moment, recommissioning a facility that has now transformed into a cornerstone for the state’s burgeoning tourism and business sectors.
Dr Mbah’s administration has made remarkable strides in revitalising Enugu’s infrastructure, promoting economic growth, and enhancing the quality of life for its citizens. The unveiling of this 100-bed hotel, long considered moribund, serves not only as a testament to his commitment to development but also as a symbol of hope and renewed purpose for the state’s hospitality industry.
A Historic Revival
The Hotel Presidential built by Dr Michael Okpara administration of the Eastern region in the wake of Nigeria’s First Republic in 1963, was once a beacon of luxury and a preferred destination for visitors and business travelers alike. However, over the years, the facility became a shadow of its former self, struggling with poor maintenance and declining patronage. Under Dr Mbah’s leadership, the hotel has been brought back to life through comprehensive refurbishments aimed at not only restoring its former glory but also enhancing its facilities to meet modern standards.
“The recommissioning of Hotel Presidential is more than just the opening of a hotel; it is the resurgence of a vital part of our state’s identity and economy,” Dr Mbah stated in his speech during the event. “We are committed to creating a conducive environment where business, tourism, and culture can thrive together.”
The recommissioned Hotel Presidential boosts modern amenities designed to cater to both local and international guests. The refurbishment includes upgraded rooms, a renovated lobby, advanced conference facilities, and leisure spaces aimed at providing a world-class experience. Speaking with newsmen at the event, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dame Ugochi Madueke, while extolling Mbah’s leadership, said “the silence has been broken; the lights are on — never to dim again; the doors are open — never to shut again; and the spirit of Enugu is back, stronger and brighter than ever.”
In the words of the honorable commissioner, “going by the size of the hotel, a minimum of 100 staff will be employed in the industry and I have discussed with the Management, most of the staff will be Ndi Enugu”.
What this clearly indicates is that a new vista of employment opportunities has been opened which also resonates with the youth empowerment agenda of the state government under Governor Mbah.
As guests began to stream into the newly reconstructed hotel, optimism filled the air. It was not just a celebration of a building’s restoration; it was a celebration of community resilience and a reaffirmation that with vision, determination, and collaboration, great things are possible.
