Continuity: South East Movement Strengthens Commitment to Tinubu’s 2027 Re-election
The South East Movement for Tinubu 2027 has pledged total support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election, declaring the region’s readiness to align with his administration’s policies aimed at national growth and inclusiveness.
This was the key resolution from a strategic leadership meeting of the Movement held on Thursday in Enugu. The gathering brought together national officers, Founding Members, State Coordinators, and other stakeholders from across the five South East states which they tagged the working group..
In his remarks, the Interim National Chairman of the Movement, Professor Damian Opata, expressed gratitude to individuals and institutions that contributed to the successful inauguration of the group on October 24, 2025. He particularly commended the Director General, Tinubu Support Groups, Dr Umar Tanko Yakasai and the Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah, for what he described as “immense and invaluable support” that made the inauguration a success.
“We heartily thank His Excellency, Barr Dr Peter Mbah, the Executive Governor of Enugu State, for the immense support he gave the Movement — support which helped the inauguration to succeed,” Prof Opata said.
He reaffirmed the Movement’s commitment to promoting a political environment that guarantees equity and development in the South East.
Prof. Opata further called on President Tinubu to consider introducing an executive bill that would simplify the process of state creation, describing the existing constitutional provisions as cumbersome. He also reiterated the group’s advocacy for the creation of Adada State, which, he said, would promote fairness and balance within the region.
“We’re are not talking about Anioma;they belong to the South South and should be there. Any Additional state for the South East should come from the region and Adada is a long standing demand to be considered”, he noted.
The group leader acknowledged the South East’s advantaged position in the scheme of things particularly the recurring representation of the region in the security architecture of the country.
“We’ve had the Chief of Naval staff and now again the Chief of Air staff. He didn’t say he will take it to another place this time.
“Let us rally support for the president’s reelection to continue to enjoy the gains of his administration”, Opata said.
He called on the opposition to be honest in the approach, noting “opposition is the essential ingredient in every responsible democracy. Opposition that is focused solely on how to remove the sitting president without offering better alternative is not a good opposition.
” If you look at the way they about it’s as if we’re still in 2023; May, June, July August; as if nothing has changed”.
On the threat by the US president, Donald Trump, he described it as partisan religious incitement targeted at dividing the people along the sentiment of faith,noting that the problem of insecurity is not peculiar to Nigeria nor did it start with President Tinubu’s administration in the country. Prof. Opata advised Nigerians not to yield to the instigative imperialism, opining that the insecurity experienced in Nigeria today is not targeted at a particular section to necessitate the allegation of genocide by President Trump.
The Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr Amaechi Sadiq Okolie, also underscored the importance of continuity in governance, stressing that President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 would ensure the consolidation of ongoing reforms.
Dr Okolie lauded the President’s security policies, noting improvements in national stability, and urged the Federal Government to consider a political solution to the case of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. He appealed to South East elders and stakeholders to continue dialogue and engagement aimed at ending the matter and promoting peace in the region.
Okolie emphasized the need to sensitize the people on the peculiar gains offered by President Tinubu’s administration to the region to enable them to see the justification for the strong support for his re-election.
“We need to tell them the truth about what’s going on around us, courtesy of the government. In terms of appointments, in terms of Infrastructure, we’ve had fair share, while we expect more as his 2027 re-election is also expected”, Okolie noted.
Speaking on the economic front, the Anambra State Coordinator of the Movement, Sir Tochukwu Amalu, commended President Tinubu’s economic reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy, which he said had laid the foundation for economic recovery. According to him, the policies have started to yield positive effects, including a gradual reduction in market prices of essential goods, especially food items.
“He’s is the only president of our country who’s bold enough to remove the fuel subsidy thereby ending the corruption in that sector. Today a bag of rice is forty thousand naira against 80 to 100 thousand naira last year. So we should continue to give him the support to sustain the good policies.
“For insecurity, he inherited it and has significantly reduced the tempo by being responsive to every security breach and initiating proactive security policies in the country”, he observed.
Amalu assured that the South East would remain steadfast in its support for the President’s reform agenda and his 2027 re-election bid, describing the Movement as “a platform for inclusive participation and national renewal.”
The meeting, attended by coordinators and national officers from all five South East states, concluded with a firm resolution to expand grassroots mobilisation and strengthen advocacy for the Tinubu administration’s programmes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
