Guinea-Bissau: Military Secure Jonathan’s Evacuation as Election Crisis Deepens
Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has been safely escorted out of Guinea-Bissau as political unrest continues to rattle the West African nation.
Jonathan, alongside other African leaders, had been in the country as part of a joint election observer mission under the auspices of the African Union (AU), ECOWAS, and the West African Elders Forum (WAEF). Reports earlier indicated that the delegation was trapped following heightened military activity amid a brewing political impasse.
Fresh indications, however, confirm that military personnel have facilitated Jonathan’s evacuation from the troubled country.
Crisis erupted after incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and opposition contender Fernando Dias separately declared victory in Sunday’s presidential poll. Their conflicting announcements threw the nation into uncertainty, even as official results had yet to be released at the time the military announced its takeover.
Back home, the House of Representatives on Thursday urged the Federal Government to expedite efforts to secure Jonathan’s return. Lawmakers also called for immediate intervention to ensure the safety of other Nigerians currently stranded in Guinea-Bissau.
