Uzo-Uwani LG Mourns Pioneer PDP Chairman, Chief Simon Nwabueze
The Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State has announced the death of Chief Hon. Simon Nwabueze, the pioneer chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the local government area and Senior Special Assistant to the Executive Chairman of the council.
In an official statement issued by the Secretary to the Local Government, Barr Casmir Ademu, the council disclosed that Chief Nwabueze died after a brief illness on January 9, 2026, at the Godfrey Okoye University Teaching Hospital, Enugu.
According to the statement, the announcement was made on the directive of the Executive Chairman of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, Hon. Barr Chijioke Ezugwu, who described the late politician as a committed party man and grassroots leader whose contributions to political development in the area would be long remembered.
“I am directed by the Executive Chairman of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, Hon. Barr Chijioke Joseph Ezugwu, to inform all stakeholders and the general public that death has occurred of Late Chief Hon. Simon Nwabueze,” the statement read.
Chief Nwabueze was noted for his pioneering role in establishing and strengthening the PDP in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, where he served as the party’s first chairman. He also held several other political positions in the course of his public service career.
Until his death, he served as Senior Special Assistant to the Chairman of the local government council. He was also the father of the Leader of the Uzo-Uwani Legislative council, Rt Hon. Christian Nwabueze.
The council described his passing as a significant loss to the local government, the political class, and the wider community. “The late Chief Hon. Simon Nwabueze was a dedicated public servant who gave his best to the service of Uzo-Uwani people,” the statement added.
The local government council stated that burial arrangements would be announced after due consultations with the family of the deceased.
Meanwhile, the council has called on the general public to continue to offer prayers for the family and for the peaceful repose of the soul of the departed elder statesman.
