Transformer Vandalism Backfires in Enugu as Suspect Gets Trapped in the Act
The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old suspected transformer vandal, Nnaji Chidiebere, after he was found unconscious with various degrees of burns while allegedly attempting to vandalise a transformer in Obollo-Afor, Udenu Local Government Area of the state.
Chidiebere was reportedly trapped inside the transformer along Ugbaike Road, Obollo-Afor, at about 2:20 p.m. on Monday, August 17, 2026, when he was discovered by members of the community.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Enugu State Command, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the suspect’s discovery followed credible information provided by concerned residents.
Ndukwe said operatives attached to the Udenu Police Division promptly mobilised to the scene after receiving the information, where they found the suspect unconscious and suffering from various degrees of burns.
The police operatives, he said, immediately evacuated him to a nearby hospital, where he was resuscitated before being referred to a specialist hospital for further medical treatment.
The suspect, upon regaining consciousness, identified himself as Nnaji Chidiebere and claimed that he had been alone at the scene.
However, the Police said preliminary investigations had linked him to transformer vandalism in the area, adding that efforts were ongoing to establish the full extent of his alleged activities.
The Command said the investigation would also focus on identifying possible accomplices and gathering sufficient evidence to facilitate the prosecution of those found culpable.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended members of the community for their vigilance and prompt transmission of information to the Police.
Giwa said the timely intervention of the residents enabled police operatives to respond swiftly, rescue the suspect and place him under arrest.
The Commissioner reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting critical public infrastructure across the state, particularly electricity infrastructure, which he described as vital to the socio-economic wellbeing of communities.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue to provide the Police with timely and credible information about suspicious movements and activities in their neighbourhoods.
The Police Command assured members of the public that the ongoing investigation would be conducted thoroughly, with appropriate legal action taken against anyone found to have participated in the alleged vandalism.
Transformer vandalism has remained a major concern in many communities, with the destruction or theft of electrical infrastructure often resulting in prolonged power outages and imposing additional costs on communities and electricity distribution stakeholders.
