Awful! 28-Year-Old Mother of Quadruplets Dies in Lagos Hospital Over Unpaid Medical Bill
Tragedy has struck a young family in Lagos State following the death of a 28-year-old woman, Mrs. Charity Anani, who reportedly died after being detained in a private hospital over an unpaid medical bill.
Mrs. Anani, who had earlier delivered quadruplets via caesarean section on February 27, 2026, passed away on Friday, April 3, after developing breathing complications. One of the newborns also died earlier, compounding the family’s grief.
Her husband, Mr. Paul, who confirmed the incident, disclosed that his wife began experiencing difficulty in breathing on Thursday evening. According to him, despite medical intervention, including oxygen support and medication, her condition deteriorated overnight.
“She started complaining about her breathing between 5 pm and 6 pm on Thursday. We called the doctor, and she was placed on oxygen, but she didn’t survive,” he said.
The bereaved husband further revealed that the family had been unable to settle a hospital bill totaling about N3 million, with an outstanding balance of N1.4 million at the time of the incident. This reportedly led to their prolonged stay at the facility located in Igando, Lagos.
He also recounted that one of the quadruplets, who had been placed in an incubator due to complications, died before the mother’s passing. However, he chose not to inform his wife due to her fragile condition.
“That baby died while my wife was still alive, but I couldn’t tell her because of her state. I thought I would explain everything when we got home, not knowing this would happen,” he added.
The incident has thrown the family into mourning, raising fresh concerns over the practice of detaining patients in hospitals over unpaid medical bills.
The family has since been discharged from the hospital.
