Police to Retrain Officers on Emerging Laws, Boost Enugu Command with More Personnel – IGP Disu
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has announced plans for comprehensive retraining of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to equip them with the knowledge and skills required to effectively enforce emerging laws and respond to evolving security challenges across the country.
Disu disclosed this on Wednesday during his maiden official visit to the Enugu State Police Command since assuming office as Inspector-General in March, where he met with officers and men of the command as part of his nationwide familiarisation tour.
The IGP said continuous capacity building had become imperative, particularly as the police remained the lead security agency during elections and other critical national assignments.
“We are embarking on comprehensive training for our officers and men to upgrade them to meet the demands of the new laws guiding our operational activities. As the lead agency in the election process, we know we must continually update our thinking and operational knowledge to meet contemporary realities,” he said.
Speaking on the country’s security situation, the police boss assured Nigerians that the Force, in collaboration with other security agencies, would sustain its offensive against criminal elements despite recent setbacks.
He lamented the recent killing of police personnel in different parts of the country, describing the incidents as painful sacrifices in the line of duty.
“We will continue to do our best alongside our sister security agencies to reduce insecurity. We have lost officers in the course of protecting Nigerians, but we remain committed to confronting criminality wherever it exists,” Disu stated.
The Inspector-General also addressed concerns over manpower shortages, particularly in the Enugu State Command, assuring officers that the issue was receiving the attention of the Force Headquarters.
According to him, the nationwide personnel deficit informed the approval granted by Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the recruitment of 50,000 new police personnel, adding that the exercise could be expanded beyond the initial figure.
“The President approved the recruitment of 50,000 personnel because of the manpower challenges confronting the Force. Those recruits are already undergoing training across the country, and considering the current realities, the recruitment may even exceed that number,” he said.
Earlier, the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, welcomed the Inspector-General to the state and described the visit as timely and encouraging for officers serving in the command.
The commissioner highlighted the command’s operational achievements, ongoing efforts to combat crime, and the commitment of officers to maintaining peace and public safety across Enugu State.
He, however, appealed for additional operational logistics, improved welfare, modern policing equipment and increased personnel strength to enhance the command’s effectiveness in tackling emerging security threats.
Giwa reaffirmed the commitment of the Enugu State Police Command to professionalism, intelligence-led policing and stronger collaboration with communities and other security agencies in ensuring lasting peace across the state.
