Enugu APC Gets New Exco as Mbah Touts Tinubu’s Reforms, Centre’s Gains

The Enugu State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has elected Dr Martin Chukwunweike as its new State Chairman alongside Hon. Chukwudi Nnadozie as Secretary, following a unanimous decision at the party’s state congress held at Okpara Square, Enugu.

Chukwunweike and 36 other executive members emerged unopposed at the well-attended congress, which the APC national panel described as free, fair and credible.

Also elected were 15 zonal executives — five each from the three senatorial zones of the state; completing the 37-man state executive structure.

Governor Peter Mbah, who addressed party faithful at the event, commended the peaceful conduct of the exercise, describing Enugu as a model not only in governance but also in politics.

“What we have done here today shows that we are members of one big family. The merger of parties in Enugu was not a marriage of convenience but a genuine union,” Mbah said.

The governor congratulated the new leadership and urged them to consolidate on the foundation laid by the Dr. Ben Nwoye-led caretaker committee. He further charged the executives to intensify grassroots engagement and effectively communicate his administration’s reforms and projects ahead of future elections.

Mbah lauded President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, noting that they had significantly increased revenue inflows to states.

“The bold and courageous policies initiated by Mr President have allowed more funds to flow to subnationals. That is why the transformations you see across Enugu today are possible,” he said.

He pointed to stabilising exchange rates, a strengthening naira and foreign reserves reportedly hitting the $50 billion mark for the first time in 13 years as evidence of macroeconomic improvements.

Speaking on the benefits of aligning with the ruling party at the centre, the governor listed key federal approvals impacting the state.

According to him, the concessioning of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport and its cargo terminal to private investors would position Enugu as a major aviation hub.

He added that presidential approval had been secured for the completion of the eastern railway corridor linking Aba to Enugu, paving the way for a multimodal transport system.

Mbah further cited the establishment of the South East Development Commission and plans to extend the high-pressure gas pipeline to Enugu within 18 months as part of the gains of connecting to the centre.

In his acceptance speech, Chukwunweike pledged loyalty to the party and assured members of the executive’s commitment to delivering electoral victories for both the governor and President Tinubu.

“We will work tirelessly to ensure victory in the coming elections. No governor has done only one tenure in Enugu State since 1999. Governor Mbah’s case will not be different, especially given his performance,” he said.

Earlier, the outgoing Chairman of the APC Caretaker Committee in the state, Dr Ben Nwoye, praised Mbah for fostering unity among old APC members and defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

“We chose inclusion over exclusion and unity over division. Today, we stand as one indivisible broom,” Nwoye stated.

The APC five-man congress panel, led by Hon. Loveth Idisi, with Hon. Tobechukwu Okonkwo as Secretary, commended the transparency of the exercise and described Enugu as one of the cleanest and most transformed states in the country.
