2027: Enugu APC Holds Hitch-Free State Congress, Signals New Political Alignment

The iconic Michael Okpara Square, Independence Layout, Enugu, came alive in the early hours of March 3, 2026, as members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) converged for the party’s state congress.
Adorned in party colours, with canopies, banners, billboards and fliers strategically displayed across the venue, the square transformed into a carnival-like arena. From the VIP podium to designated canopies for delegates from the 17 local government areas, a mammoth crowd of party faithful, leaders and supporters gathered in high spirits. Music from the popular Ulaga Music Stand heightened the festive mood as attendees danced and exchanged pleasantries.
The roll call of attendees reflected the political weight of the gathering. Virtually all major stakeholders in the state were present, underscoring what many described as a defining moment for the APC in Enugu.
Observers noted that the congress effectively brought together different tendencies within the old APC, as well as defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party, forging what party leaders called a united and formidable front ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development comes in the wake of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s defection from the PDP to the APC last year – a move endorsed by several political actors within and outside the state. The large turnout at the congress was widely interpreted as a demonstration of the state’s political realignment.
Accreditation of delegates from wards and local government areas preceded the election of new state executives. The process was supervised by the APC National Committee for the Enugu State Congress, led by Hon. Loveth Isidi.
Delegates unanimously elected Dr Martin Chukwunweike as State Chairman and Hon. Chukwudi Nnadozie as State Secretary, alongside 35 other members, forming a 37-member State Executive Committee. In addition, 15 zonal executives – five from each of the state’s three senatorial districts, emerged.
The national panel described the exercise as free, fair, transparent and credible.
Governor Mbah arrived at about 1:30 p.m. to loud cheers from supporters. Moving round the venue, he greeted party members and acknowledged the enthusiastic reception before addressing the gathering.
He commended party leaders and faithful for conducting a peaceful congress, describing the exercise as evidence of unity and maturity.
“What we have done here together shows that we are members of one big family. Enugu State is not just a model of governance; it is also becoming a model for politics. The union we have witnessed is not one of convenience but of shared conviction,” he said.
The governor lauded the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu, noting that increased revenue inflows to states had bolstered developmental projects in Enugu. He urged the newly elected executives to build on the work of the Dr Ben Nwoye-led caretaker committee and to effectively communicate government reforms and achievements at the grassroots.
Highlighting the benefits of alignment with the Federal Government, Mbah cited the concessioning of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport and its cargo terminal, the proposed extension of the railway to Enugu, the establishment of the South East Development Commission, and plans for a high-pressure gas pipeline. These initiatives, he said, would unlock significant economic opportunities for the state.
In his acceptance speech, Dr Chukwunweike pledged loyalty to the party and assured members of his team’s readiness to deliver electoral victories in future contests.
“We will not disappoint the confidence reposed in us. Since 1999, no governor in Enugu State has served only one term. Given his performance, Governor Mbah will not be an exception,” he said.
In his valedictory remarks, Dr Ben Nwoye commended the governor for fostering unity among old and new members. The APC National Deputy Chairman (South), Chief Emma Enukwu, charged the new leadership to prioritise mobilisation and grassroots engagement.
Other dignitaries at the event included Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Uchenna Ugwu; Senators Osita Ngwu and Kelvin Chukwu; members of the National and State Assemblies; local government chairmen led by Hon. Martins Oke; Deputy Governor Barr Ifeanyi Ossai; Secretary to the State Government Prof. Chidiebere Onyia; Chief of Staff Barr Victor Udeh; Chief Ikeje Asogwa; Senator Chuka Utazi; Senator Ben Collins Ndu; Hon. Eugene Odo; and Deputy Speaker Hon. Ezenta, among numerous political stakeholders.
With the successful conclusion of ward, local government and state congresses, the APC in Enugu State has projected an image of cohesion and organisational strength.
As the 2027 elections draw nearer, the congress appears to signal a recalibrated political trajectory for Enugu – one anchored on unity within the ruling party and strategic alignment with the centre.
