The Provost of the College of Nursing Science and Health Technology, Nsukka (CNSHTN), Enugu State, Comrade Eddy Egbara (PhD), has charged newly admitted students of the institution to prioritise innovation, ethical leadership, and critical thinking as the requisite tools for navigating the complexities of the modern world.
Speaking on Thursday during the college’s 28th Matriculation Ceremony in Nsukka, where 307 students were formally admitted into various programmes, Dr Egbara noted that the current era of rapid technological advancement necessitates a blend of creativity and strong moral values.
A Call to Excellence
Addressing the matriculants, the Provost emphasised that the institution is committed to producing professionals who are not just job seekers but job creators.
“You are entering the college at a time of global transformation, where the future belongs to innovators and problem-solvers,” he said. “Let your years here prepare you to become agents of positive societal change. Seek not just to earn a living, but to make a meaningful impact.”
He further cautioned the freshmen on the importance of early discipline, noting that habits formed in the first semester often determine a student’s long-term academic trajectory. He urged them to balance their academic rigor with physical and mental well-being while shunning all forms of anti-social behavior.
Support and Infrastructure
Dr Egbara seized the occasion to commend the Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Mbah, for his visionary leadership and sustained intervention in the state’s education sector. He attributed the college’s ability to secure full accreditation for its programmes to the governor’s investment in infrastructural renewal.
However, the Provost noted that the steady increase in student population—a testament to growing public confidence, has placed a strain on existing facilities.
“The increased enrollment has created a pressing demand for additional lecture halls, laboratory spaces, and hostel accommodation to maintain our high standards of teaching,” Egbara appealed.
In her remarks, the immediate past Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Loretta Chika Ukwuaba, urged the students to believe in their potential for greatness.
Sharing her personal journey, she noted: “If you work hard, you can become a professor. Like you, I started in a College of Education, and today I have reached the peak of my career.”
The ceremony, which featured the administration of the matriculation oath, was attended by several dignitaries, including Chief Onyema Idoko, who represented the Nsukka Local Government Chairman, Chief Jude Asogwa.
Responding to the charge, several matriculants expressed gratitude for their admission and pledged to justify the sacrifices made by their parents through diligent study and professional conduct.
