Anambra Police Confirm Recovery of Bodies of Missing Camerounian Women in Omambala River
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of two bodies believed to be part of three Cameroonian women reportedly kidnapped in the state.
The victims were discovered in the Omambala River, located in Anambra West Local Government Area, following an intensive search operation carried out on Friday evening by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, working alongside expert divers and community volunteers.
Police spokesperson, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, who disclosed the development on Saturday, said the bodies have been identified by relatives as Mrs. Bognou Alice and her niece, Miss Sandra. He noted that the remains have been deposited in a mortuary for forensic analysis and further investigation.
Prior to the discovery, the police had arrested two suspects — 37-year-old Nonso Augustine Akpeh and 44-year-old Kingsley Akpeh — who are currently assisting investigators. A third suspect, Uchenna Nicholas Mmadu, is still on the run, with security agencies intensifying efforts to track him down.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, extended his condolences to the grieving families and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to ensuring justice is served. He also directed all tactical units to scale up operations aimed at locating the remaining missing woman.
The grim discovery has triggered widespread shock in the state, heightening concerns about the safety of foreign nationals and residents. Authorities have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any useful information that may aid the ongoing investigation.
