Power Crash: EEDC Announces Emergency Load Management Over Transmission Line Fault
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) has announced the implementation of emergency load management across parts of its network following a fault on the Mando–Shiroro Transmission line.
In a public notice issued on Thursday, the distribution company disclosed that the development has significantly affected power allocation to some transmission stations within its franchise area, covering Enugu, Anambra and Ebonyi states.
According to the statement signed by the Group Head, Corporate Communications, Mr Emeka Ezeh, the National Control Centre (NCC), Oshogbo, has directed the company to maintain only 44 megawatts (MW) on the Onitsha/New Haven 330kV line. The affected transmission stations under this allocation include Awada, Agu-Awka, Nibo, New Haven, Nkalagu and Abakaliki.
The NCC further advised that 10MW and 11MW be maintained on the Ugwuaji and Apir Transmission Stations, respectively.
EEDC explained that the emergency load management has become necessary pending the resolution of the fault on the transmission line, which is critical to power supply within the region.
“As a result of this development, customers served by our subsidiary companies-MainPower, FirstPower and EastLand -in Enugu, Anambra and Ebonyi States respectively, are impacted,” the company stated.
The distribution company expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the situation and appealed to customers for patience and understanding.
“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this may cause our customers and appeal for their understanding as efforts are being made by the relevant stakeholders to clear the fault and restore normal supply,” the statement read.
Industry observers note that transmission line faults often result in significant power allocation cuts, compelling distribution companies to implement load shedding to prevent total system collapse.
As of press time, there was no official timeline for the restoration of full supply, but EEDC assured customers that updates would be provided as the situation evolves.
