By Uche Eze

The House of Representatives candidate for Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Hillary Onyishi, popularly known as Ikemba, has called for the strengthening of democratic values and the enthronement of responsible public leadership as critical ingredients for Nigeria’s progress.

Onyishi, a United States-based Mechanical and Aerospace Engineer, made the call while speaking on a radio programme aired on Voice FM, Nsukka.

According to him, accountability, integrity and transparency remain indispensable virtues that must guide both public office holders and democratic institutions if confidence in governance is to be restored.

He noted that democracy flourishes when elected leaders remain faithful to the mandate given to them by the electorate, stressing that any conduct perceived to be at variance with public expectations often raises concerns about trust and accountability.

“Public leadership thrives when it is built on accountability, decency, honesty and commitment to service. These values remain fundamental to sustainable democratic growth,” he said.

Speaking on the nation’s development challenges, Onyishi maintained that effective solutions can only emerge from a proper understanding of the country’s socio-economic realities.

He urged leaders at all levels to embrace strategic thinking and pursue policies capable of enhancing Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global economy.

“You cannot effectively solve challenges without first understanding them. As a nation, there is need for greater strategic thinking and policies that position us competitively within the global community,” he stated.

The NDC flag bearer further observed that several countries had achieved remarkable development through innovation-driven policies and deliberate economic planning, adding that Nigeria possesses all the necessary ingredients to become a leading destination for investment and growth.

According to him, the country is endowed with abundant natural resources, favourable climatic conditions and a highly talented population capable of driving sustainable economic transformation.

“There is immense potential in Nigeria. What is required is strategic planning, innovation and collective determination to maximise our opportunities and strengthen our place in the global economy,” he added.

On his aspiration to represent the constituency in the House of Representatives, Onyishi said his ambition is anchored on responsive leadership, effective representation and policies aimed at improving the welfare of the people.

He lamented the persistent developmental challenges confronting many communities, including inadequate healthcare services, poor road infrastructure, irregular electricity supply and limited access to potable water.

According to him, addressing these challenges should form the core responsibility of any representative genuinely committed to the wellbeing of the people.

“I appreciate everyone who has supported me and I encourage continued engagement from all stakeholders. Leadership should always be about service and commitment to improving the lives of the people,” he said.

He added: “I strongly believe our people deserve quality representation and leadership that is attentive to their aspirations and challenges. The goal should always be to create opportunities and improve living conditions for everyone.”

On youth empowerment and employment, Onyishi expressed concern over the growing difficulty many graduates face in securing opportunities that match their qualifications and skills.

He called for the implementation of policies that encourage innovation, entrepreneurship and job creation, particularly in the technical and engineering sectors.

The candidate also urged members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress and Nigerians in general to remain committed to constructive engagement and collective efforts geared towards building a stronger economy and improving the overall welfare of citizens.
