By Wilfred Chukwuma

Two members of the Eyewitness Network, Enugu State Chapter, have been appointed Executive Assistants to the Senator representing Enugu North Senatorial District, Senator Ikeje Asogwa.

The appointees are Hon. Charles Okoye, State Director of Mobilisation of the Eyewitness Network, and Hon. Philip Okoro, Director of Community Engagement of the organisation.

The duo were among the latest batch of seven aides appointed by Senator Asogwa as part of efforts to strengthen his administrative and political support structure and enhance effective representation of the Enugu North Senatorial District.

With the latest appointments, the number of personal aides appointed by the senator since his assumption of office has risen to 69, according to the information contained in the announcement.

The appointments have attracted commendation from members and supporters of the Eyewitness Network, who described the development as recognition of the contributions of the organisation and its members to democratic participation, community mobilisation and good governance.

In the statement announcing the appointments, Senator Asogwa charged the new appointees to see their positions not merely as privileges, but as opportunities and a call to service, urging them to deploy their experience and capacities toward the development of society.

He said the new aides were expected to justify the confidence reposed in them through dedication, responsibility and commitment to the interests of the people.

Reacting to the development, the State Director of the Eyewitness Network, Comrade Sam Udekwe, congratulated the two appointees, describing their emergence as an encouraging development for the organisation.

Udekwe said the appointment of two serving directors of the network into strategic positions in the office of the senator demonstrated that the contributions of members to democratic governance and grassroots engagement were being recognised.

According to him, “The appointment of Hon. Charles Okoye and Hon. Philip Okoro is a source of great joy and pride to the Eyewitness Network, Enugu State Chapter. It demonstrates that commitment, loyalty, grassroots mobilisation and meaningful participation in democratic governance can receive appropriate recognition.”

He added: “We sincerely appreciate Senator Ikeje Asogwa for finding our members worthy of these responsibilities. This is not only an honour to the appointees; it is also an encouragement to every member of the Eyewitness Network who believes in the democratic ideals that brought the organisation into being.”

Udekwe further urged the appointees to reciprocate the confidence reposed in them by the senator through hard work, accessibility and dedication to the people.

“We expect them to bring their wealth of experience, especially in mobilisation and community engagement, to bear on their new assignments. They must see these positions as platforms for service and not simply as appointments,” he said.

The Eyewitness Network State Director also commended Senator Asogwa for what he described as his confidence in young and committed Nigerians who have demonstrated capacity to contribute to public service.

He said the senator’s decision to draw his aides from different backgrounds and areas of competence would strengthen his ability to connect effectively with constituents.

“Leadership is ultimately about service to the people. We therefore commend Senator Asogwa for giving capable individuals the opportunity to contribute to the development of Enugu North Senatorial District. We believe the appointments will further strengthen the bridge between the senator and the grassroots,” Udekwe stated.

He congratulated Okoye and Okoro alongside other beneficiaries of the senator’s gesture on their appointments, urging them to remain accessible, responsive and committed to the collective interest.

The development is also expected to deepen the participation of the Eyewitness Network in civic and community engagement, particularly through its members occupying positions that directly interface with the people.

The newly appointed Executive Assistants are expected to work with Senator Asogwa’s broader team in advancing his legislative and constituency responsibilities and supporting programmes targeted at the people of Enugu North Senatorial District.

For the Eyewitness Network, the appointments have provided an additional reason for its members to remain committed to constructive democratic participation and service to society through support for continuity of good governance.

The organisation therefore called on its members to regard the development as both an honour and a responsibility, while pledging continued support for initiatives that promote accountable leadership, citizen participation and the delivery of democratic dividends.
