Nigeria Union of journalists, NUJ, Nsukka Federated Correspondents’ chapel, Enugu State Council, has congratulated Professor Simon Uchenna Ortuanya on his emergence as the 16th Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

In a press statement jointly signed by the chairman, comrade Ike Okenyi, and the secretary, Brendan Eze, the union noted that the appointment of Prof. Ortuanya as the first Nsukka indigenous Vice Chancellor of the University has laid to rest years of agitations by the institution’s host communities, adding that the victory was for the entire Enugu North senatorial district.

“The appointment of Prof. Ortuanya has ended years of agitations from the host communities, that have been clamouring for an indigenous Vice Chancellor of the premier university in the past years.

“It is not in dispute that since the inception of the university in 1960, no person from Nsukka cultural zone has been appointed the Vice Chancellor of the university, resulting in the agitation over the perceived marginalization of the host communities on the leadership cadre in the institution.

“Prof. Ortuanya’s appointment is therefore a victory for the entire people of Enugu North Senatorial District, bearing in mind the travails earlier passed in their attempts to occupy the exalted seat”, the statement read.

They said they were aware of the strategic role played by the Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah in the actualization of the aged long dream of the university’s host communities and commended him for his commitment and resilience in the processes that led to the appointment.

While charging the new Vice Chancellor to brace up with the challenges of university administration, using his wealth of experiences to restore the glory and dignity of the citadel of learning, the union urged him to serve with the fear of God.

“As Prof. Ortuanya awaits his official inauguration as the new Vice Chancellor of this prestigious university, the union hopes that he will map out strategies that will revamp the ivory tower, for the Lion to roar again and for the dignity of man to be totally restored.

“Though, the task of rebuilding the university may be challenging, the union enjoins him to serve with the fear of God, perseverance, steadfastness and to bring his wealth of experience to bear”, the statement added.
