NPF Unveils New Police Division in Enugu, Reaffirms Commitment to Community Policing
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on Tuesday commissioned the newly constructed Affa Police Division in Affa Community, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, as part of ongoing efforts to expand police presence and strengthen community-oriented policing across the country.
The commissioning, which took place on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, underscores the IGP’s resolve to bring policing closer to the people, particularly in rural communities, and to ensure that the security and safety needs of Nigerians are effectively addressed.
Represented at the event by the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, the IGP described the establishment of the Affa Police Division as a deliberate and strategic intervention aimed at bridging policing gaps in Affa Community and the wider Udi axis of the state. He noted that the new division would enhance rapid response to security challenges, improve crime prevention, and foster stronger collaboration between the police and the host communities.
Egbetokun appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to support the new division through moral, material, and logistical assistance to enable officers and men to commence operations promptly and effectively. According to him, community support remains a critical pillar in achieving sustainable security and public trust in policing.
The IGP also charged the pioneer Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and personnel posted to the division to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in the discharge of their duties. He emphasised the need for respect for the fundamental rights of citizens, urging officers to combine firmness and courage with emotional intelligence, restraint, and social sensitivity in their interactions with members of the public.
While reiterating the zero-tolerance stance of the Nigeria Police Force against corruption and misconduct, Egbetokun warned officers against all forms of financial impropriety and unethical practices capable of bringing the Force into disrepute, including the practice commonly referred to as “crying down credit.”
The ceremony attracted several dignitaries, including the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Uche Ugwu, and the Chairman of Udi Local Government Area, Hon. Hyginus Agu. Also in attendance were traditional rulers, community leaders, other key stakeholders, and senior police officers.
The commissioning of the Affa Police Division is expected to significantly enhance security architecture in the area and reinforce the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to responsive, people-centred policing in Enugu State and beyond.
