Enugu Security Architecture: Police Nab 14 Kidnappers, Recover 5 AK-47s, 310 Rounds
The growing impact of Enugu State Government’s technology-driven security infrastructure and intelligence-based policing came to the fore yesterday as the Enugu State Police Command arrested 14 suspected members of a kidnapping syndicate allegedly linked to multiple abductions and a murder across the state.
The suspects, arrested through a series of intelligence-led operations conducted in Enugu and several other states as well as the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, were also found to be in possession of five AK-47 rifles, two pump-action guns, one locally fabricated firearm, 310 rounds of live 7.62 x 39mm ammunition, eight cartridges and seven empty AK-47 magazines.
The breakthrough came against the backdrop of intensified deployment of technology, intelligence gathering, inter-agency collaboration and coordinated security operations in the state.
Briefing journalists at the State Police Command Headquarters, Enugu on Friday, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, said the arrests were the outcome of sustained efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating within and across the borders of the state.
Giwa said the suspects were arrested at various times in June, July and August 2026 in Abuja, Enugu, Kogi, Nasarawa, Rivers, Kwara and Taraba states.
He disclosed that preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects belonged to an organised criminal network whose members converge in Enugu to plan and execute kidnapping operations before returning to their respective locations.
The effectiveness of the state’s security architecture was particularly demonstrated in the handling of the recent kidnapping at a church in Inoyi, Affa Community, Udi Local Government Area.
According to the CP, one of the victims abducted from the church was rescued on August 2, while subsequent joint operations led to the rescue of the remaining two victims, arrest of three suspects, neutralisation of one suspect and recovery of ransom money, firearms and ammunition.
Two other suspects linked to the operation subsequently fled to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, but were traced and arrested there by the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Violent Crime Response Unit, AK-VCRU.
Giwa said the suspects, after fleeing Enugu, regrouped with their associates in Port Harcourt and allegedly abducted another victim who was released after payment of ₦5 million ransom.
The development highlights the increasing capacity of security operatives to track criminal suspects beyond the immediate scene of an offence through intelligence sharing and inter-state collaboration.
The Commissioner said the suspects had, during interrogation, confessed to involvement in several kidnapping operations across Enugu State.
He listed the affected areas to include the Enugu-Ugwuogo-Opi-Nsukka Road; Obioma-9th Mile-Umulumgbe-Okpatu axis; Eke-Affa-Egede-Ezinze axis and various locations in Ezeagu Local Government Area.
In one of the cases, the gang allegedly abducted a male victim at Mgbabuowa/Aguobuowa, Ezeagu, on May 25, 2026, collecting ₦5.5 million ransom.
The suspects were also allegedly involved in the May 9 abduction of two male victims and the shooting and murder of a female victim at Obioma, Udi, during which $28,700 was reportedly obtained as ransom.
Another operation allegedly involved the abduction of two male victims along the Eke-Ezinze Road, Udi, on April 10, for which $70,000 ransom was reportedly paid.
The police further linked the syndicate to the kidnapping of seven victims at Obinaofia, Ezeagu, on April 12, during which ₦25 million was allegedly collected as ransom.
The Commissioner said these were in addition to other kidnapping cases and ransom payments disclosed by the suspects during interrogation.
Giwa also disclosed that the investigation had revealed how the suspects allegedly concealed proceeds of their criminal activities.
He said the gang invested the proceeds in livestock and properties, while also engaging in lavish spending, conspicuous consumption and overseas trips, including travels to neighbouring countries such as Cameroon.
The Commissioner described the latest arrests and recoveries as a major demonstration of the effectiveness of intelligence-driven policing.
“The arrests and recoveries are a clear demonstration of the effectiveness of sustained intelligence gathering, ICT-enabled investigation, inter-agency collaboration, inter-state cooperation and coordinated operational policing adopted by the Command,” Giwa said.
The Commissioner assured residents that the Police Command would sustain its offensive against kidnapping, armed robbery, murder, rape, cultism and other violent crimes.
“We will continue to make Enugu State increasingly unconducive to unrepentant local criminals, criminal elements seeking to infiltrate the State, and their activities,” he declared.
He said investigations were still ongoing to establish the involvement of the suspects in other kidnapping and violent-crime cases within and outside Enugu State, identify other members of the syndicate and recover additional firearms, ammunition and criminal proceeds.
According to him, the suspects would be charged to court upon completion of investigations.
Giwa specifically commended Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for what he described as his “unwavering support and commitment” to making Enugu safe and conducive for residents, visitors and legitimate economic activities.
He said the Governor’s support for training and security operations had significantly strengthened the collective fight against crime.
The CP also commended Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for his strategic leadership and sustained operational support.
He equally acknowledged the contributions of other security agencies and members of the public, stressing that community intelligence remained indispensable to effective policing.
The latest breakthrough is particularly significant as it demonstrates how technology, intelligence gathering, rapid response, surveillance and inter-agency coordination can combine to track criminal networks beyond their immediate operational environment.
In a confessional statement during interviews with journalists, one of the kidnappers said they have their gang members across various locations in the country. He further confessed he received his own share of ten million naira from the ransoms.
Earlier in the month, the Police had activated the surveillance and technical capabilities of the Enugu State Command-and-Control Centre during the operation to rescue victims abducted at Inoyi, Affa, underscoring the role of the state’s security infrastructure in supporting real-time intelligence and coordinated response.
The Enugu Police Command had also previously attributed major crime-fighting successes to proactive and intelligence-driven policing carried out with other security agencies and local security structures.
